What is Surf CAD? And how does it affect
you and your surfing?
CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) has been around
for years and in most industries has become the standard production method
for any item or product that requires a high level of accuracy in a short
amount of time. So it's no wonder that it would soon find it's way into
surfboard manufacturing.
Although some boards still require being 100%
hand shaped, we are now able to offer our team riders and customers the
ability to fine tune their equipment and find that magic board without
having to adjust to a new board every time.
Mike Walker spends a large amount of time
refining and developing each model we build on screen so that we can offer
the most up-to-date, highly accurate equipment available. Essentially
"shaping" on a screen with a mouse and keypad, he is able to make
adjustments down to 1/100th of an inch and store each individual custom
order in our database so that whether you are a touring pro or an avid
weekend warrior you can be assured that the board you are riding was built
specifically for you and your requirements. And when the day comes that you
need to get a new one-you'll start exactly where you left off.
If your surfing is evolving, then your
equipment should do the same. The CAD system allows us to offer you this
advantage with no added cost.

Whats the difference between Polyurethane foam and EPS Foam?
Polyurethane (PU) Foam has long been the
standard foam used in the production of surfboards. Highly adjustable
densities and compatibility to resin and color applications, have made this
the favorite for a majority of board builders world-wide.
Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam, commonly
known as "styrofoam" has also been available for equally as long, but
has experienced a resurgence of popularity with the closure of Clark Foam,
the world's leading supplier of PU foam. This lighter weight foam allows us
to offer a lighter, strong alternative to standard PU construction boards.

What is Fiberglass? And how does it affect your board?
Fiberglass is used as a means of giving
rigidity to a foam blank. Something that would otherwise be quite flimsy and
would flex too much to ride.
There are both different thicknesses (or
weight) of cloths as well as different weaves available. In lay mans terms
the higher the weight of cloth, the stronger the board will be. However the
denser weaves also absorb more resin and are therefore heavier as well.
The objective is to have enough layers of
cloth where you need it for strength and resistance to dents from your feet,
while adding fewer ounces of cloth on the under side of the board that is
not exposed to as much force and body weight.
One of the major benefits of ordering a custom
board is that you have the ability to control this weight to strength ratio
when ordering and can customize it to your riding ability and performance
needs.
We currently offer 4oz., 5oz., 6oz. and 8oz.
